• The instrumentation on the dash lighting up, but being unable to start the vehicle
• Being unable to jump-start the vehicle successfully
• When the engine only starts in some drive modes or gears, but not in others
• The starter being covered in oil or smoking upon inspection

See any of these, and you may need to install a new starter (this is all the more likely if you've already ruled out alternator and spark plug problems). Luckily, you can do the job yourself in just a few hours if you've got the right skillset and a basic understanding of wiring diagrams (though having an electrician or a Mercedes-Benz service professional do it is recommended). Either way, and most importantly, before buying a new one, you should make sure it's the genuine article.
