The Mercedes-Benz 300 SD was actually three models from several Mercedes-Benz series. The first was a "base" 300 SD sedan, which ran from 1978 to 1980. The second, the Mercedes-Benz 300 SD Turbodiesel, came out in 1980 and ran until it went out of production in 1985. The third was another base-style 300 SD, one available for 1991, 1992, and 1993. If you're driving one these days, though, there's a better-than-average chance it's one of the latter, from one of four model years: either 1984, 1985, 1992, or 1993.

Mercedes-Benz 300 SD Turbodiesel, for example, was a Mercedes-Benz S-Class sedan in Mercedes-Benz Series 126 (W 126 D 30 A). It had a four-stroke, in-line, five-cylinder (I5) diesel engine, turbocharger, cam, fuel-injector, and transmission specs similar to its sibling from 1978 and on. However, the car achieved higher horsepower at the outset -- 121 -- until late 1982, when output rose to 125 horsepower.

The other car, the base-style 300 SD, was another Mercedes-Benz S-Class sedan, but one in Mercedes-Benz Series 140 (W 140 D 35 A). This model had a turbocharged four-stroke, in-line, six-cylinder diesel engine with an emissions control system that contained an oxidizing catalyst. Its cam and gearbox specs were once again similar to those of its siblings, but the injection pump was a Bosch six-plunger type. Engine output was rated at 150 horsepower. In 1993 and 1994, the model became the Mercedes-Benz S 350 Turbodiesel.
